Exploring the Great Outdoors
As a lover of whimsy and all things creative, I'm thrilled to share with you my favorite way to get kids excited about nature: Nature Journaling!
This fun and interactive activity combines observation, drawing, and writing to help young explorers develop their skills in art and science. By encouraging children to slow down and truly see the world around them, we can foster a sense of wonder and curiosity that will stay with them for years to come.
Getting Started
- Select a special notebook or journal just for Nature Journaling – one that's big enough to hold all sorts of treasures like leaves, rocks, and feathers!
- Choose a spot in nature where you can observe the world around you – a park, garden, or even your own backyard!
Now it's time to get creative! Encourage children to draw what they see, using their senses to describe the sights, sounds, and smells of nature. Don't worry too much about making mistakes – this is all about having fun and learning together.
Recording Nature's Wonders
- Draw it! Encourage children to draw what they see, using a variety of materials like pencils, markers, or crayons. Don't worry if their drawings aren't perfect – the goal is to have fun and express themselves.
- Write about it! Ask children to write about their observations, describing the things they saw, heard, and smelled in nature. This can be as simple as writing a list of colors or textures they noticed.
Remember, the most important thing is to keep exploring and having fun! Encourage children to return to their journals again and again, adding new observations and drawings each time.
